MODERN ALKALOIDS

Alkaloids constitute one of the widest classes of natural products, being synthesized

practically by all phyla of both marine and terrestrial organisms, at any evolutionary

level. The extraordinary variety (and often complexity) of alkaloid structures and

biological properties have long intrigued natural product chemists (for structure

determination and biosynthetic studies), analytical chemists, and synthetic organic

chemists. Toxicologists, pharmacologists and pharmaceutical companies have used

and will certainly continue to use alkaloids as biological tools and/or as lead

compounds for development of new drugs.

Basic and Clinical Pharmacology 10th Edition,Bertram G.KATZUNG

This book is designed to provide a complete, authoritative, current, and readable pharmacology textbook for students in the health sciences. It also offers special features that make it useful to house officers and practicing clinicians.

Information is organized according to the sequence used in many pharmacology courses and in integrated organ system curricula: basic principles; autonomic drugs; cardiovascular-renal drugs; drugs with important actions on smooth muscle; central nervous system drugs; drugs used to treat inflammation, gout, and diseases of the blood; endocrine drugs; chemotherapeutic drugs; toxicology; and special topics. This sequence builds new information on a foundation of information already assimilated. For example, early presentation of autonomic pharmacology allows students to integrate the physiology and neuroscience they know with the pharmacology they are learning and prepares them to understand the autonomic effects of other drugs. This is especially important for the cardiovascular and central nervous system drug groups. However, chapters can be used equally well in courses and curricula that present these topics in a different sequence.

Within each chapter, emphasis is placed on discussion of drug groups and prototypes rather than offering repetitive detail about individual drugs. Selection of the subject matter and the order of its presentation are based on the accumulated experience of teaching this material to thousands of medical, pharmacy, dental, podiatry, nursing, and other health science students.

Major features that make this book especially useful to professional students include sections that specifically address the clinical choice and use of drugs in patients and the monitoring of their effects—in other words, clinical pharmacology is an integral part of this text. Lists of the commercial preparations available, including trade and generic names and dosage formulations, are provided at the end of each chapter for easy reference by the house officer or practitioner writing a chart order or prescription.

TEXTBOOK OF RECEPTOR PHARMACOLOGY (Second Edition)

The second edition now concentrates on cell membrane
receptors themselves, together with their immediate signal transducers: ion channels, heterotrimeric
G-proteins, and tyrosine kinases.
The writers of the chapters in this book have been actively involved in teaching the various
courses, and our joint aim has been to provide a logical introduction to the study of drug receptors.
Characterization of drug receptors involves a number of different approaches: quantitative description
of the functional studies with agonists and antagonists, quantitative description of the binding
of ligands to receptors, the molecular structure of drug receptors, and the elements that transduce
the signal from the activated receptor to the intracellular compartment.
The book is intended as an introductory text on receptor pharmacology but further reading has
been provided for those who want to follow up on topics. Some problems are also provided for
readers to test their grasp of material in some of the chapters.

GPAT 2010 QUESTION PAPER

Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT 2010) is an all India Examination to be conducted by The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara on behalf of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.

The Scores in Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE) have been in use till the year 2009 for admission in Master’s Programme in Pharmacy (M.Pharm) and also for awarding fellowships/scholarships to Pharmacy Graduate along with engineering graduates. The Organizing Committee for GATE has expressed its inability to include Pharmacy graduates in GATE with effect from the year 2010, owing to operational problems due to large number of candidates appearing for GATE examination.

Therefore, in order to facilitate admission of Pharmacy graduates in M.Pharm as also to award fellowships/scholarships to Pharmacy graduates, AICTE decided to organize and conduct an examination in the name of Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) with effect from academic year 2010-11. Accordingly, a National Monitoring Committee (NMC) was constituted for monitoring the issues pertaining to the policy as well as conduct of GPAT examination.

NMC has recommended for the conduct of 1st GPAT examination for Pharmacy graduates, i.e. GPAT-2010 by ‘The M.S.University of Baroda’, Vadodara–390 002, who have agreed to conduct the examination on May 02, 2010 throughout the country.

The M.S.University of Baroda, Vadodara is the sole authority for conducting GPAT-2010 examination through out the country and declaring the result for the year 2010.

Pharmacology--Principles and Practice

This unique and much needed textbook meets the rapidly emerging needs of programs training pharmacologic scientists seeking careers in basic research and drug discovery rather than such applied fields as pharmacy and medicine. While the market is crowded with many clinical and therapeutic pharmacology textbooks, the field of pharmacology is booming with the prospects of discovering new drugs, and virtually no extant textbook meets this need at the student level. The market is so bereft of such approaches that many pharmaceutical companies will adopt Hacker, et al. to help train new drug researchers.

The boom in pharmacology is driven by the recent decryption of the human genome and enormous progress in controlling genes and synthesizing proteins, making new and even custom drug design possible. This book makes use of these discoveries in presenting its topics, moving logically from drug receptors to the target molecules drug researchers seek, covering such modern topics along the way as side effects, drug resistance, Pharmacogenomics, and even nutriceuticals, one in a string of culminating chapters on the drug discovery process.

*Uses individual drugs to explain molecular actions
*Full color art program explains molecular and chemical concepts graphically
*Logical structure reflecting the current state of pharmacology and translational research, starting with receptors and finishing with target molecules
*Covers such intricacies as drug resistance and cell death
*Consistent format across chapters and pedagogical strategies make this textbook a superior learning tool.

Treasure Island__R.L.Stevenson

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "pirates and buried gold". First published as a book in 1883, it was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881-82 under the title The Sea Cook, or Treasure Island.

Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, it is an adventure tale known for its atmosphere, character and action, and also a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality—as seen in Long John Silver—unusual for children's literature then and now. It is one of the most frequently dramatised of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perception of pirates is vast, including treasure maps with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders.

Five Point Someone – What not to do at IIT! is a 2004 novel written by Chetan Bhagat, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. This was his debut novel.

It is about the adventures of three mechanical engineering students (and friends), Hari Kumar (the narrator), Ryan Oberoi, and Alok Gupta, who fail to cope with the grading system of the IITs. Ryan is a bit smart and outspoken, whereas Alok and Hari are mildly cry babies. The three hostelmates - Alok, Hari and Ryan get off to a bad start in IIT - they screw up the first class quiz. And while they try to make amends, things only get worse. It takes them a while to realize: If you try and screw with the IIT system, it comes back to double screw you. Before they know it, they are at the lowest echelons of IIT society. They have a five-point-something GPA out of ten, ranking near the end of their class.

A Christmas Carol--Charles Dickens

A Christmas Carol[note 1] is a novella by English author Charles Dickens first published by Chapman and Hall and first released on 19 December 1843. The story tells of sour and stingy Ebenezer Scrooge's ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim.

The book was written and published at a time when Britain was experiencing a nostalgic interest in its forgotten Christmas traditions, and at the time when new customs such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were being introduced. Dickens's sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and the Christmas stories of Washington Irving.

PHARMACOGNOSY--SECONDARY METABOLITES

Plant secondary metabolites have been a fertile area of chemical investigation for many years, driving the development of both analytical chemistry and of new synthetic reactions and methodologies. The subject is multi-disciplinary with chemists, biochemists and plant scientists all contributing to our current understanding. In recent years there has been an upsurge in interest from other disciplines, related to the realisation that secondary metabolites are dietary components that may have a considerable impact on human health, and to the development of gene technology that permits modulation of the contents of desirable and undesirable components.
"Plant Secondary Metabolites: Occurrence, Structure and Role in the Human Diet" addresses this wider interest by covering the main groups of natural products from a chemical and biosynthetic perspective with illustrations of how genetic engineering can be applied to manipulate levels of secondary metabolites of economic value as well as those of potential importance in diet and health. These descriptive chapters are augmented by chapters showing where these products are found in the diet, how they are metabolised and reviewing the evidence for their beneficial bioactivity.
